Historic Bridgetown and it’s Garrison

Historic Bridgetown

Historic Bridgetown and it’s Garrison is a magnificent settlement dating back to the 17th century.

During the 18th and 19th centuries the British kept adding to the old fortified port town to create one of the most beautiful and sophisticated cities in the Caribbean, a fine example of British architecture from the era. The St. Ann’s Garrison in Bridgetown was the largest in the British colonies and by the 19th century included soldiers' barracks, a commissariat, as well as a parade ground.

The heart of Barbados

Bridgetown was an essential location in the development of the British Colonies in the Atlantic; not only was the town an important centre for trade, administration and communications, but it also contributed to science, culture and technology.  Thanks to the town’s importance in the development of the Caribbean region, UNESCO has included it in the World Heritage List.

The Historic Bridgetown and it’s Garrison have been the heart of the island for over 400 years and today the surrounding areas receive hundreds of thousands of visitors looking to explore the beauty of Barbados. The fort also hosts an impressive gun collection with pieces dating back to the 17th century. The centre is a cosmopolitan tropical city in which the old houses and buildings contribute to the unique atmosphere. Bridgetown, which takes its name from a bridge that was constructed here by the original Amerindian settlers continues to attract tourists with a wide range of activities, from horse racing to diving and snorkelling to rum tours. You can find more details about this magnificent historical site and an in-depth description of the main attractions inside Bridgetown.
