Barbados is a famous spot on the world polo map, thanks to the exciting Polo Season which attracts visitors from all over the world.
While many tourists have their first polo experience on our island, there’s also an impressive number of visitors who plan their holidays here based on the match dates.
The polo season starts immediately after Christmas and lasts until the end of May. And besides the local teams, you’ll have the chance to see many international polo teams that come to Barbados to play against the national team.
What You Should Know Before Going to A Polo Match
The play is divided into periods called chukkas. On our island, the matches have eight chukkas that last seven minutes each.
Each field polo team has four riders who need to pass a small wooden ball, using a mallet, to teammates.
At each end of the polo field, there are lightweight goalposts eight yards (approx. 7m) apart; riders score when they hit the ball between the goalposts. The goal is scored only when the rider stays on his horse.
Barbados has four main polo grounds; the most popular is home to the Barbados Polo Club at Holders, in the parish of St. James. The other three grounds belong to Apes Hill Polo Club (at Water Hall, in St. James), Lion Castle Polo Club and Clifton Water Polo Club (in the parish of St. Thomas).
